While shopping for clients these past few weeks, I couldn't help but notice that almost every mannequin was dressed in houndstooth. I mean, dresses, shirts, shoes, coats, scarves, you name it. I felt like I was being stalked by the houndstooth monster! So I faced the monster head on in the fitting room.

This pattern can be very intimidating to many but if you know how to wear it, there's nothing to be afraid of. Houndstooth and other men's inspired prints are often worn in the corporate workplace but I want to show you how to work it during times of play, after 6pm.

1. Winter Holiday Party

Let's tackle the biggest challenge of them all, the coat. Are you bold enough to wear a houndstooth coat or do you feel like a target in the wild? Here's a tip: when choosing a houndstooth coat be mindful of the size of the print. A larger black and white houndstooth print is best for someone with high contrast (comparing your complexion to your eyes and hair - light skin & dark hair/eyes or vise versa) while a smaller print like this Modcloth vintage inspired coat works better for people with a low contrast. Red is a classic go-to color when pairing a black and white garment, which is why I chose the Kate Spade gloves and Blink booties. They also add a festive touch for the holidays.

2. Fashion Networking Party

This gorgeous green Michael Kors houndstooth blouse is accented with a golden link above the bust. Using the clasp as inspiration, I paired it with a tan leather pleated paper bag skirt by REDValentino. To tie it all together, I brought in black Louboutin suede pumps. With the blouse tucked in and your head held high, your statement skirt and overall look will be a conversation starter at your next fashion networking party. Land that dream client or job in style.

3. Girl's Night Out

A girl's night out is the perfect time for show and tell. Say it with me, L.A.M.B houndstooth heel . Crazy hunh? Not if you know Gwen Stefani's style. I paired her funky shoes with bright red/orange Saint Laurent leather pants to highlight the shoes. On top, is a sheer black REDValentino blouse with accented flowers who's red hues play off of the pants. Lastly, you need a beautiful coat when out on the town. I chose a gray kimono jacket to go with the base gray on the shoes. Such a fun look.

4. Barbiesque Birthday Bash

Ok so, Barbiesque isn't a word but you know what I'm talking about. We all have that friend who cannot live without pink, (unless it's yourself) so their birthday is the perfect opportunity to wear some more of it. However, a houndstooth print is a sophisticated twist to make a more adult looking dress. This dress says a lot on its own so I simply matched a pink Python ombre shoe, small pink and black earrings and an iridescent mini purse with pink flecks of light. Bring it on birthday girl!

5. Reunion Cocktail Party

Treat your houndstooth as an accessory or accent piece like this Stella McCartney clutch. So small yet effective. Come to think of it, my high school reunion is coming up soon. You can't go wrong with this sexy chic block colored cocktail number with matching shoes. It'll make ten years look good on anyone.
