Happy Black History Month! I bow my head and pay my respects to those who paved the way for me as a free young black woman in America. I wouldn't be able to post this today if it weren't for them. So here's my Black History Month Tribute blog post and video (below). It's a little different than usual because I've written a poem to share with you.

I'm freeing myself from the constant labeling and "black expectations" that I hear from everyone. Whether it's to pursue a career I'm not passionate about, because I must "represent the [entire] black race well" or the expectation to look, speak or act a certain way because my "name doesn't match" the color of my skin.
